Please check if your children are eligible for Free School Meals

With Covid-19 with us for the last 14 months, many families incomes have taken a hit and reduced due to the pandemic.

Schools are back and you can check if your child is eligible for free school meals by reading this small article.

It was the Liberal Democrats who introduced Free School Meals universally for all children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 in 2014.

Extra funding, the pupil premium, another Liberal Democrat policy, is given to your school if you are on the following types of income:

  • Income Support
  • income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • the guaranteed element of Pension Credit
  • Child Tax Credit (provided you’re not also entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual gross income of no more than £16,190)
  • Working Tax Credit run-on – paid for 4 weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit
  • Universal Credit – if you apply on or after 1 April 2018 your household income must be less than £7,400 a year (after tax and not including any benefits you get)

After Year 2, your child will still get free school meals because you receive one of the income types above.

Locally, register for free school meals via the council website.

As local Liberal Democrats we know education is the most important part of a child’s life and having a healthy meal is a key part of that education programme.
