Police are urging Bedfordshire residents to be vigilant while shopping, and take some simple steps to keep their belongings safe.

Sergeant Ben Dimmock said: “It only takes a few seconds for someone to dip their hand into an open bag and remove a purse, so it’s vital that shoppers remain wary of their surroundings when out and about and keep their belongings close.

“In some cases, skilled thieves distract shoppers while they browse so they can dip their hands into pockets and bags and remove the victim’s purse or wallet. By the time the victim realises, the thieves are usually long gone.

“When you are out and about, keep your bag close to you at all times, and ensure it is closed properly. If you’re not carrying a bag, keep your purse or wallet in a front trouser pocket or an inside jacket pocket. Be discreet when you’re handling money at cashpoints, and shield your PIN when you’re entering it at a checkout or ATM.

“The force offers deterrents like purse bells, which will alert you should anyone try to take your purse or wallet. They are available from local community events and from local policing teams and PCSOs.”

Other personal safety tips to bear in mind include:
• If you are wearing headphones or chatting on your mobile phone you will be distracted from your surroundings and may not hear trouble approaching
• Stick to busy, well lit streets whenever possible and avoid quiet or badly lit alleyways, subways, isolated parks or waste grounds. Take the safer route, even if it is longer
• Know where you’re going and the best way to get there. Avoid long waiting times at bus stops and stations by checking the arrival times before leaving home.
• If you feel threatened, head for a safe place where there are lots of people, such as a pub, shop or garage
